Alaska, day 1, 7/28/2017

We actually flew in on July 27, but the 28th was our first full day in Juneau this trip.

Day 1

Every morning, (and evening, and most times in between) we go sit out on the deck and watch all the amazing things going on in and around the Gastineau channel.
This morning, a bald eagle swooped down, grabbed a fish with it's talon, and dragged it out of the water.  It tore it apart, and then left what it didn't want for the seagulls to have.
Welcome to Alaska!

We wanted to see a bear, so Caitlyn gave us specific instructions as to where to find bears.

Yep, this girl knows her stuff!  Within just a few minutes, the momma bear and her cubs showed up.  Someone had also told the BBC about this place, so they were filming for the show "Wild Alaska Live" right on the very bridge Caitlyn told us about.

The bear decided she wanted to come up on the bridge to see what everyone was looking at!  We tried to act casual, and she went back down to the stream to catch salmon.

 The Mendenhall Glacier never disappoints!

One of my favorite spots is at the end of the road on Douglas Island.  There is a little board walk out to the ocean.  It's like a jungle!  The vegetation there is amazing.  It is a temperate rain forest.

I didn't quite get to Dean before the timer on my camera went off.

 Oh, yeah, that's better!

So, my Xtra-tufs are the coolest boots ever!  They get even cooler when you get mud on them!

The end of July through the first of August is the salmon run.  It's awesome and gross at the same time!  It's also the reason we got to see so many bears.

Caitlyn educated us about the salmon berries.  This girl is like a walking encyclopedia!  Or, as my sister in law calls her, "wikiCaitlyn".

Who knew porcupines were so dang cute?  The big one was at the top of Caitlyn's driveway, the little one was in her flower bed.

In the evenings, we watch the cruise ships leave.  I can't sleep until the last one is gone.

That was a pretty good first day, and it got even better, Mike, Amanda, Braden and Hanna just flew in!
